Branding

Are you freaking kidding me? Continental and United are merging, but the new airline will be called UNITED and their headquarters will be Chicago, not Houston. I’m sure these details were bargaining chips used to seal the deal, but sometimes branding is important… and Continental has a far better reputation than United.

I hope they know what they’re doing…

United and Continental join forces in $3-billion merger

The deal creates a behemoth airline, to be called United. Executives do not expect large-scale cutbacks because the carriers have little overlap.
United Airlines and Continental Airlines announced early Monday morning they were combining operations in a $3-billion merger, forming the world’s largest airline.

Its aircraft will bear Continental’s globe logo on the tail and be painted in the Houston-based carrier’s colors. And it will be unveiled to customers with a new campaign, “Let’s Fly Together.”

Headquarters for the new United operations will be in Chicago’s Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. United will move forward with plans to place its nerve center and 2,800 staffers in the skyscraper starting in October, sources said.

Houston will become the largest hub for the new carrier, bypassing United’s longstanding fortress hub at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Smisek will have offices in both cities, the airlines said.

Warren Buffet: VAT tax a ‘good thing’

It was three on a couch – Buffet, Munger and Gates, all wealthy men, all convinced that American citizens aren’t being taxed enough.

Berkshire Hathaway Chief Executive Warren Buffett, Vice Chairman Charlie Munger and board member and Microsoft (MSFT) Chairman Bill Gates told FOX Business that for the U.S. to continue to compete on the world stage, revenue must increase and the VAT is the best option to ensure that.

Reportedly the third richest man in the world, Buffet approves of the VAT, claiming that Americans aren’t taxed enough.

“In the end we are not taxing enough unfortunately or we’re spending too much, probably some of each,” Buffett told FBN’s Liz Claman. “We’ve got a gap of 10 percentage points between what we’re raising in taxes and what we’re spending one way or another we are going to have to close that gap in a major way , so if some of those taxes fall on me or some fall on Berkshire that’s probably the way it should be.”

Based on the fact that the wealthy in this country pay most of the taxes, I’d venture to opine that he is paying his fair share. The federal government is not a charity, but he should feel free to donate if the spirit moves…

We are taxed enough, bordering on overmuch. And it’s not our damn fault if the current administration has spent our great grandchildren’s money with TARPS and bailouts and idiotic public healthcare… trying to pay for it with a Value Added Tax would be like closing the barn door after the cow got out.

Think our economy’s in the tank now? Add the VAT and watch as it circles the drain.

Guess who we met?

Patti of good googledy moogledies recently came through our area on vacation and hubby and I were lucky enough to meet her, her husband [Batman] and their son [The Dude]. Patti, you really need a nickname!

It was a real pleasure to share some good Italian food with great people. And, maybe dispel some rumors… such as… no… I’m not really a 13 year old girl.

Patti’s started posting photographs of the trip and they’re gorgeous; well worth a look. Welcome back, y’all!

Nugent: Immigration lesson for numskulls

I’d vote for Ted. Wonder if he’d run?

In the absence of any real border enforcement by Fedzilla and after the emergency of the recent murder of rancher Robert Krentz, Arizonans rightfully took matters into their own hands and passed a law allowing Arizona cops to demand immigration papers from people they stop.

Good for Arizona. Other states, especially border states, should follow its lead. In short, Arizona’s new law makes it a crime to be in Arizona illegally. It’s 2010 – Good morning, America! Those people who can’t produce documentation proving they are in the country legally can be jailed up to six months and fined $2,500.

Of course, the pro-illegal-immigration crowd is going berserk that Arizona has done such a common-sense thing. These Democratic numskulls see any immigration reform measures that seek to protect our border as a threat to their future political base. You would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see that the grand plan of the Democrats is to entrap illegal immigrants by giving them legal status and then enslave and destroy them with numerous Fedzilla handouts and programs.

Pro-illegal-immigration weasels are protesting and yammering that this new law will lead to profiling. President Obama has weighed in and asked the Justice Department to review Arizona’s new law to see if it is legal.

Unbelievably, while our borders are largely open and being overrun, the Obama administration recently lectured Israel about expanding its communities just a few feet on land that arguably is its to expand upon.

While I applaud Arizona for its bold and brave new law, putting illegals in jail is the wrong move. That costs too much. I say Arizona should follow its own American hero, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County.

Sheriff Arpaio keeps crooks in a large outdoor holding facility and makes them sleep in tents. Among other things, he feeds them bologna sandwiches. I hope they are not fresh.

My good friend Sheriff Arpaio’s common-sense policies and practices drive the American Civil Liberties Union and other leftist numskulls batty. He puts smiles on the faces of Americans who still believe that pragmatism and common sense should rule the day.

Indeed, something needs to be done about illegal immigration and the 12 million to 15 million illegals who already are in America and causing a tremendous financial burden on states because of their abuse of the states’ social services and criminal justice programs. Hospitals in California and other states have closed, and jails and prisons in border states are upward of 40 percent full of illegals.

The invasion roils on.

Hospitals and social-service agencies should follow Arizona’s lead and require that those seeking services provide proof of legal residence. American taxpayers should not be required to pay for providing medical or any other services to illegal immigrants. Making us do so is the ultimate definition of insanity.

What America shouldn’t do is continue to ignore the protection of our borders. There is a growing sentiment among governors of border states that we should call out the National Guard to help secure our borders. Makes sense to me.

Both Republicans and Democrats have made immigration blunders in the past. We should learn from those mistakes and endeavor not to make the same mistakes again.

I support an open, frank and transparent debate on immigration. Let’s lay all the cards on the table and hear from all sides. I say we start with a simple admonition from President Reagan: A nation without borders will soon cease to be a nation.

Good for Arizona. It is refreshing to see that common sense still rules the day somewhere.

GM Shell Game

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) asks for an accountability of the monies owed by GM, disputing repayment claims as being from “one taxpayer-funded bailout account to another”.

Love Paul Ryan!

How to be a good citizen of obamaland

The president is so troubled by protesters that he even included those concerns in his University of Michigan commencement speech! Then he proceeded to give tips on what we should all read and why. Ya know, so we can ‘all get along’.

President Barack Obama says he’s troubled by the angry rhetoric of those who are trying to make the case that government is “inherently bad.”

He tells graduates at the University of Michigan that people who take that line of attack seem to forget that in a democracy, “government is us.”

Obama also says in his commencement speech that members of the class of 2010 should seek out and listen to opposing views on the issues of the day.

His advice: If you’re a regular Glenn Beck listener, then check out the Huffington Post sometimes. If you read The New York Times editorial page the morning, then glance every now and then at The Wall Street Journal.

He says that may “make your blood boil,” but it’s an essential part of being an effective and informed citizen.

People are not protesting government. THEY’RE PROTESTING YOUR IDIOTIC POLICIES!

Good gracious, this man is clueless. And the fact that he keeps talking about the protesters only shows how much they’ve gotten under his skin. Is his hubris such that he assumed nobody would question remaking the country over in his socialist/marxist image?

Spiny Orb Weaver

Hubby and I were just remarking on the absence of spiders in the yard since hiring the exterminators, but while working outside yesterday I stumbled across this little lady.

They’re insect predators, so very welcome here.

Smackdown! Sharpton vs. Sheriff Joe

Sorry, but Al’s an idiot.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio does a great job and Al Sharpton… what the hell does he do besides scream about racial profiling – which the new Arizona law does not lend itself to, regardless of his meandering bullshit. And since when does an illegal alien have civil rights under our constitution?
