Once again Joan at Primordial Slack has tunneled inside our psyches…

A snippet:

For the record, once again, let me say that I don’t ever need, much less want, to see a woman talking to me about men’s sports. Ever. As a woman I enjoy watching men being men, or even behaving like the boys they are at heart. Men at work. Men at play. Awesome and sexy. Don’t bring another woman into that fantasy, bee-yatch. I like to watch Mikey do dirty jobs because I just do. I like football and rugby because. Now go away, get outta my face and offa my television for at least one hour.

Truth, like a cool breeze on a hot summer day, always satisfies.

1. What’s your favorite color?

I invariably waver day to day on colors… some days I can’t get enough of orange, other days lilac. But green has always been my absolute favorite. I just don’t wear it for some reason.

2. If you get a plane ticket for free to go wherever you’d like – where would your final destination be?

I like what VW said; my final destination would always be home. But on the way could we stop in the UK for a visit to the ancestral stomping grounds?

More~~~>

3. Is there anything in your life you always wanted to do and never had the chance to?

No, I’ve had the chance to do anything I wanted. Just not the money. Not that I have. It shall ever be the roads not taken that we regret…

4. Which one is your favorite movie classic? (Let’s say: Older than 20 years)
That’s difficult, but I’ll say The Philadelphia Story. Also love another Hepburn/Grant called Holiday.

5. If you were blond – would you mind the blonde-jokes (and of course if you ARE blonde – do you mind them?)

Nope. Everybody’s got to be somewhere.

6. What is it that always and 100% certain makes you laugh?

When I answer the phone and it’s my friend Anthony doing lines from The Princess Bride. “MAWWAIGE is what keeps us togedder”.

7. Where do you usually buy your clothes?

Macy’s

8. Does wind bother you or do you like it?

Unless it’s a hurricane, it doesn’t much bother me. Like it? When it was wind through the tall pines on a cool Texas morning. Yep, pretty much only then and now only in my memories.

9. What is it that you dislike about high school reunions?

Never been, so I guess you could say that I dislike going. My 40th high school reunion is coming up in a few short years… now that one could be interesting…

10. Are you a cat or dog person?

While I do like cats and have known a few, I’m really a dog person.

11. Can movies make you cry and if yes – when was the last time you cried in a movie theater or in front of the TV?

Of course! The most crying I ever did over a movie was at a theater after watching The Way We Were! Escaping was a little embarrassing!
Finally saw The Blind Side a couple of nights ago and teared up a little at the end…

I’m going to be a rebel and not tag anyone… but you’re welcome to steal it.

The WordPress community is under attack.

There are easily accessible instructional videos on the net that can walk you through hacking a WordPress install in less than 2 minutes. Then there are the pros…

30,000 WordPress Blogs Infected to Distribute Rogue Antivirus Software

Almost 30,000 WordPress blogs have been infected in a new wave of attacks orchestrated by a cybercriminal gang whose primary goal is to distribute rogue antivirus software, researchers from security firm Websense said in a blog post on Monday.
The attacks have resulted in over 200,000 infected pages that redirect users to websites displaying fake antivirus scans. The latest compromises are part of a rogue antivirus distribution campaign that has been going on for months, the Websense researchers said.

Many of the blogs compromised in these recent attacks were running outdated WordPress versions, had vulnerable plug-ins installed or had weak administrative passwords susceptible to brute force attacks, said David Dede, a security researcher with website integrity monitoring firm Sucuri Security. “It seems the attackers are trying everything lately.”

More ~~~>

I have news for them; even an up to date, no plug ins, illegible 24 digit password WordPress install can be hacked. IS hacked, every single day.

The experts at WordPress have some suggestions to harden an install, but they obviously cannot design a secure program. Or maybe the nature of the software makes that difficult.

Web hosts are not responsible for making backups of our install or databases… though most will restore an earlier backup as a convenience. But unless you can stop the hackers, a host will drop your account because it’s a danger to their other customers, especially if you’re on shared hosting.

The responsibility is all ours, even if we are out of our element. I know I am. But the hackers have ramped up in the last three months and right now my WP install is repelling around 50 hits a day from them. Used to be Fridays were the worst, but the entire weekend is very bad now.

I have been hacked before and might be again, but here is what has worked for the last several months on my site and the four other blogs I’ve used it on. “Precaution is better than cure”.

Plugins:
Limit Login Attempts
Install, activate and it starts working. Default limit is 4 attempts before a lockout. It won’t stop them, but in some cases will slow them down.
Here’s a log it generates of attempts…

Always replace the default ‘admin’ username with one of your own choosing.

BulletProof Security
This is a pretty involved plugin and requires some reading and participation on your part. But never fear; if I could do it, you can too.

WordPress Firewall 2 has turned out to be a very good choice. Like BPS, it blocks multiple types of attacks.

Seeing 50 of these a day in your inbox can cause a sense of unease, but there is a way to turn off the emails.

File Permissions:
Through cPanel’s file manager the file permissions can be changed to limit writing by an outside source. Of course, if someone hacks into cPanel, this is moot.
I changed my file permissions to those suggested by BPS Security:

And don’t forget to backup, backup, backup!

Now aren’t you folks on WordPress.com, Blogger, Tumblr and Posterous happy to be where you are?

Good writers are like vacation tour guides; when they take you someplace beautiful you go willingly and always want to return.

‘Shelter’ reminded me of what I call the sweet spot out back. Whatever the season, whether it’s cloyingly humid or briskly clean and clear, the sun comes through the trees exactly right in that spot first thing in the morning. Being a morning person means sometimes I’m able to watch the sun rise and glean the heat from the first rays to hit that spot. It’s like a little miracle, every morning.

A partnership between Facebook and Politico announced today is one of the more far-reaching efforts. It will consist of sentiment analysis reports and voting-age user surveys, accompanied by stories by Politico reporters.

Most notably, the Facebook-Politico data set will include Facebook users’ private status messages and comments. While that may alarm some people, Facebook and Politico say the entire process is automated and no Facebook employees read the posts.

Rather, every post and comment — both public and private — by a U.S. user that mentions a presidential candidate’s name will be fed through a sentiment analysis tool that spits out anonymized measures of the general U.S. Facebook population.

Not the only straw, just the final one.

I was just remarking that blogging has changed for me; it used to feel like a community and now… well, not so much. But with her return, it feels different already!

A very warm welcome home, Lee Ann!

DaGoddess never left us but she has moved camp to http://dagoddess.wordpress.com. Best of luck in the new digs, Joanie!
