SPENT

Just played Spent and got my butt kicked. Loans went unpaid, the gas was turned off… How depressing. For so many people this is no game.

You’re a savvy consumer used to pulling yourself up by your boostraps. So if you were a jobless parent, down to your last $1,000, you could make it work, right? Spent is a new free online “game” that tests to see whether you have what it takes. Put out by the Urban Ministries of Durham, it’s less fun than a sobering dose of reality. I played it and in order to make it through the month I couldn’t let my kid go on field trips and I missed his baseball game in order to take a job helping a neighbor move. Also, I got fired for talking to a union organizer. The gas also got shut off and I drove away from an accident instead of paying the ticket. I had no choice, otherwise I would have gone broke and lost the game.

The Consumerist

I chose the warehouse job because I worked in one for 11 years… but opted out of health care. Ooops.

We’ve played this game in real life. However, I did play the game. I ran out of money on day 29 because I had to get my pet taken care of.

Folly lost the first round when she refused to let her dog suffer and paid a vet to treat him.

Last year we had to treat our beagle’s infected neck wound ourselves. We used left over antibiotics (reduced the dosage after researching dogs’ dosages online) and neosporin, changing the dressing twice a day and hoping he’d respond. He did, fortunately.

Fuck a bunch of overpriced vets, along with everyone else, mostly the government. I’ve been driving on expired tags since October because I don’t have $407.00 to give to the state of Florida for their unconstitutional impact fee. Folly has to give them $444.00 to transfer the twenty-year-old car she just bought.

Things are getting better for us but what a lot of Americans don’t understand is that it’s too goddamned expensive out there just to live half-decently and make the goddamned minimums that are required to keep a job and eat.

…and prices are only going up. On everything, thanks to the current administration and their war on oil/coal/productive individuals.
