I never pass up an opportunity to try and educate people on gun safety, including in internet comment threads, and I am constantly amazed at how many people are woefully ignorant when it comes to this topic, and tragedy ensues. My attitude may seem abrasive or harsh, but there are no second chances. Period. I have always been a stickler for details when it comes to firearms. I first “met” Pamibe by arrogantly chiding her for referring to a magazine as a clip. I guess I just can’t help myself…

I also am harsh on gun safety, for the very same reasons. I have a nephew who’s recovering from a .22 in the knee because one of his friends did not understand basic gun safety. Hopefully he’s learned that not only you yourself need to be vigilant about firearm safety, you need to make sure anyone around that handles your guns is too.

The jury is out, however, on prosecuting those who leave firearms within reach of children. Although I’m a stickler as well on keeping small children safe from improperly stored guns, I’m not sure what good it does to jail someone who’s child just died from a horrible accident. Unless perhaps there was really extreme stupidity going on, like knowingly allowing a child to play with a loaded gun and doing nothing to stop it.

My first gun lesson was around 5 years old, my stepfather had a 22 revolver, a Chicago Police and Fireman’s Badge in a bread box about 5 ft off the floor on a shelf, it was unloaded but the bullets were with it, I took it outside and tried to fire it into a telephone pole but could not figure out how to load it correctly, I still remember how many different ways I tried, I got real lucky, that was almost 60 years ago but I still remember it as if it was yesterday – My mother to this day claims there was never a gun in the house -
I entered a home with loaded rifles hanging on the wall and kids everywhere in Ft Meyers Fl early 70′s. as I handed my 38 spl revolver to the father who wanted to see it, his son, about 10-12 ran thru us and grabbed it and it was the loudest, click, click, click, I ever heard – this gun had a very heavy trigger that was like a hair trigger to this kid – I had just taken the gun out of the car and removed the bullets as I crossed the back yard –
My Ex-business partner claimed to be an ex-Navy Seal (total lie, never served, 60’s-70’sdraft dodger), he was sitting in his SUC in a grammar school parking lot as school let out playing with a 357, it discharged into the door and thankfully he had 125gr 38+P and not full loads, it did not exit the door and hit the woman in the car next to him – at a shooting place we used in the everglades his AR15 just goes pop, just the primer, he stopped, thought about it than proceeded to pull the trigger and sprayed parts at two other people plus himself, by a miracle all injuries were miner, the AR15 had to be totally rebuilt with barrel and all – He never checked the barrel
My total firearms training was several 8 round mags in an M1 in boot camp then 5 rounds in a 45 at Norfolk Naval Base so I could be an armed guard on a Nuc Sub at age 17 1/2 – the rest was on the job and everyone else’s errors, again I was very lucky
As my daughters grew up I taught them that there were loaded guns in the gun cabinet and if they ever wanted to see one to just let me know and I will unload it so it would be safe – I was only asked once by the oldest to see them, I also took her out in the woods at age two and had her fire a 22 semi-auto so she could see what it could do, only one bullet in the chamber and the mag was empty just in case -
I have more stories with very tragic endings – There is no excuse for kids getting guns, loaded or not from any house they did not break into –
I almost forgot at age 16 Zip gun blew up in my face, Doc removed half the 22 case and 3 stitchs in the right check, missed and eye or temple, again very lucky, do not know if police ever believed my story, all three officers on the force knew me, it was a small area
