Just one question – what are they going to do when the people they are now supporting takes the guns away? – Tell my what makes you think they won’t – My NRA stickers are going in the trash as will anything they ever send me from this day forward.
I’ve never supported the NRA, partly because I’ve always felt I was “bigger” than just 1 issue. This kind of thing makes me glad I’ve never sent them any of my $ and I never will. We’ll just happen to agree on the 2nd ammendment instead.
Yes, Jihad Gene, it’s legit, sort of. The NRA was using (scarce) dollars and manpower fighting this bill when Congress put an exemption in that would make the NRA and a very few other old, big organizations still free to speak. So, the accountants of the NRA decided to quit fighting a Bill that did not affect them any longer. I do not agree, I think they should have kept fighting but, perhaps, the accountants are right.
The NRA could spend millions and even win. We can run the Dems out of office in November. We could completely sweep Congress, voting every single one out. They still have that lame duck session between November and January. Then what? The Donks pass it anyway, with nothing to lose, leaving the NRA poorer by whatever they spent, money that could pay for lawyers fighting whatever antigun nonsense the Donks also pass in that same lame duck session.
Is the NRA right? I dunno. There is room to disagree among friends. Just remember, it IS a disagreement among friends.
I’m still not happy with the NRA about their little ‘carveout’. Free speech for me, but not for thee. Whatever, they’ve been lobbyist long enough that playing politics is second nature.
You’re quite correct; they haven’t endorsed Dingy Harry yet, but word is they are planning to do so. They’re a “ONE ISSUE” organization. And it’s not the 1st Amendment, it’s the 2nd.
They’re worried that an anti-gun member will gain Harry’s seat if he’s booted. Again, they’re just playing the political game. Problem is, more and more Americans are sick to fucking death of those games.
It appears to me that the GOA is trying to discredit the NRA in a blatant attempt to gain new members.
The NRA is the oldest pro-gun rights lobbyist group around.
It seems to me that they know how the game needs to be played. One can agree or not, but it seems Red State blogger is creating a tempest in a teapot to gain acolytes for GOA, only extent since 1974.
And FWIW, of course the NRA is a one-issue group. Sorry, I’m not ready to kick my membership to the curb in favor of the GOA and some blogger I never heard of.
I don’t see the GOA going after the NRA’s jugular, but they could be. All organizations want to add members.
I know the NRA is the oldest gun lobby; I have been a member off and on for the past 30 years.
Also, I don’t presume to discredit all the wonderful things they’ve accomplished on the American gun owner’s behalf through the years, I just disagree with them about some recent issues, that’s all. Of course they’re a one issue group… it’s just the way they choose to protect that one issue that I’m having a problem with at the moment. Sticks in my craw. I’ll get over it.
I can’t kick my membership to the curb because I’m currently not a member -of either organization. And I have no plans to become one. What you do with yours is your business – I’m not asking you to tear up your card or whatever. Just saying what I think.
Sorry; I’m prickly today for some reason. Too much politics, probably.
Our local Tea Party bunch has been all over this for a few weeks now.
But if the NRA does endorse Harry Reid then they are not so smart and I’ll wash my hands of them for permanent (not that I am now or ever have been a member – cause I ain’t).
I am a one issue voter too – my issue is freedom. That one issue encompasses the 2nd amendment and the 1st and a whole lot of other bits all rolled up into one.
People can argue that by doing a bad thing they can do good… but it’s hard to wrap my mind around that. Doesn’t feel right. Like Patti said, FREEDOM. That’s the issue.

I don’t know; this astounds me. Thus the yellow and green poop.

I like the way you put that… we’ll just happen to agree on the 2nd amendment…
We’ve been members and I appreciate their work in Washington. Just… Harry Reid? Who or what will they support next?

I recently re-joined and was glad I did but now this???

For once I don’t know what to say. Is this legit?

Guess I won’t be rejoining the NRA. Assholes.

You might want to re-think your position on the NRA. I am after reading this:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/02/conservatives-ponder-nra-priorities-motives-questioned-kagan-reid/?test=latestnews
It sounds to me like the GOA is gunning for the NRA with the help of bloggers who don’t really have any valid claim that the NRA is endorsing Reid.

Odd thing is, I never heard of the GOA until now. But I’ve been meaning to join the JPFO for years…
