The man and I celebrate our anniversary today, which means I’ve been bargaining with God for seventeen years.

It’s not that I question the permanence of our relationship, but rather the impermanence of man himself. How Sylvia Plath of me to concentrate on the inevitable end rather than the present, but I’m not good at goodbyes. They terrify me. So, I lie awake at night and cajole the Almighty, always asking for ‘a little more time, please’. Take a limb, an organ… just give me more time with the man.

The Lord’s been good to me -us- and for that I thank Him. Arthur is a remarkable man and I’m grateful every day that he pursued long enough for me to catch him. Seventeen years ago we drove to the south Dade courthouse in Homestead and got married and I have never for one moment regretted that decision.

I love you, sweetie.
