It’s 34 outside, 60 inside and no space heaters to be found. It’s pretty clear that none of us were prepared for cold weather. Thank goodness I have winter apparel and know how to layer. I’m wearing roughly half of my wardrobe at the moment.
Weather Underground reports snow about a mile west of us and I wouldn’t doubt it a bit, though there’s no precipitation here.
This little bit of cold is no match for the complete, bitter cold the north is suffering, but dayum. Hey, at least they have heaters, right? Think I’ll go turn on the oven…

Still busting through inches thick ice out of all the horse buckets and troughs 2X a day – more than two weeks of this now. I’m about sick to damn death of ice, give me some freaken glowball worming NOW!
10. January 2010 at 11:01 am
It’s been awhile, but I remember those days! Brutal is the only word for that!
Stay warm and I’ll pray for some glowball worming!

I like to think of all this weather as Mother Nature’s upraised middle finger to Al Gore.
10. January 2010 at 12:06 pm
Sounds good to me!
10. January 2010 at 12:25 pm
And all of the rest of his lying, thieving cronies.

Been a long, long time since I’ve seen virtually the entire U.S. completely covered in subfreezing temperatures. Global warming actually sounds like a good idea right now.
10. January 2010 at 12:06 pm
I agree, Dave!

Pam… my 1928 bungalow is heated by a gas boiler via floor-level radiators. For some reason, there’s not a radiator in the kitchen (?), so I simmer a pot of water on the stove to act as a makeshift humidifier/heat source.
Works great, just like when my great-grandma would put a shovel of snow in an iron pot on the woodstove.

That’s a great idea, Jana; thanks! The oven isn’t making a difference at all – probably too insulated. The temp in the house has gone from 59 to 60, but I don’t think the oven has had that much impact.

I like sweaters and curling up in bed. Cuz it’s a good excuse to do nothing.
10. January 2010 at 3:38 pm
Thank God for my down comforter…!
10. January 2010 at 2:59 pm
I’m wearing shoes and socks ALL DAY! And jeans and two shirts. The other night to sleep I wore socks and some kind of fleece ear-warmer. And nothing else. ‘Cause I don’t like sleeping confined in pajamas that twist or nightgowns that ride up. But the socks and ear-warmer kept me warm. And the fleece blanket, the regular cover, and two crocheted afghans.
10. January 2010 at 3:41 pm
ME TOO!
Hey, this is a shock to the system for someone who lives in shorts and flip flops! LOL!
I had three blankets on the bed and still couldn’t get warm til Arthur found our goose down comforter and I put the flannel sheets on… now it’s like sleeping in a big, warm, fuzzy slipper…!
10. January 2010 at 3:57 pm
Still finding this amusing!
Although we have a windchill of 11 right now, brrrr
Even the puppers are refusing to come out from under the blankets at all. They come out for food and potty, that’s it.

Bree, with her nearly impervious double coat, believes this the best time of the year! Wants to be outside chasing a ball and thinks the rest of us are nuts.
Daisy, on the other hand, shivers violently unless I hold her in my lap swaddled in blankets!
10. January 2010 at 10:57 pm
My goofy dogs are both driving me nuts… they want to be outside all. the. time.
I let them out when I got home from work tonight and when I didn’t hear Sloane woof to come in, I went to check on them. They were both just laying on the deck, in a foot of snow, happy as clams. Or, if not clams, something that likes to lay around in cold, wet snow.

The blue norther is over, it’s still subfreezing at night but warmer during the day. I hate it when the northers blow in, the dogs spend way too much time indoors.
I was actually wearing sweats inside the house most of the week.
11. January 2010 at 8:28 am
I’m wearing two pairs of pajama bottoms. The temp in the house has fallen to 57.
11. January 2010 at 8:54 am
I saw snow Saturday morning in Orlando at the Happiest Place on Earth. Which became the coldest, wettest, most miserable place on earth!
11. January 2010 at 8:57 am
That must have been amazing!
Congratulations again on your run, WB!

There’s something wrong when Washington state is warmer in January than Florida! Anyone else hear hoofbeats?
I had sleet while at my Mother’s home on Saturday afternoon (couldn’t believe it!) and a friend in Parrish had snowflakes flutter past her home.
I did have a good laugh about all of this crap though. The transplanted Northerners are laughing and saying, “I thought I left this behind!” and the Southerners are saying “Holy crap! What the hell is this and how do we make it stop?!”
Hey Gore, how’s your Global Warming working now?!
11. January 2010 at 9:43 am
Almost… there’s just a little more cursing involved…!
11. January 2010 at 4:54 pm
I saw a whole bunch of space heaters at WallyWorld last night and thought of you. If I knew your address, I’d ship you one or two of ‘em!
11. January 2010 at 4:57 pm
Awwww… that’s so sweet! Fortunately, it’s warming up down here… plus, I’m getting used to the cool… 60 doesn’t feel like the end of the world anymore…

Humorous sidenote: Several years ago, Salt Lake City had a massive snowstorm that caused widespread power outages for days with severe cold weather. At that time, my 81-year-old father and 50-year-old handicapped brother (Downs Syndrome) were stranded in a drafty house without power or phone service. I called the police to make sure they got checked on.
When the police arrived, they found both my father and brother (both bald) wearing my late mother’s wigs and every bit of their clothing – and some of hers, including her housecoats – to keep warm.
The police were unable to convince my dad to let them take the both of them to a shelter. Dad said “we’re fine – but if you could shovel the driveway for me, I can get out on my own if the power doesn’t come on by night time.”
They did shovel the driveway. And the sidewalks… And I would sure love to have read the police report about the old transvestite men that refused rescue and then put the officers to work.
